A Federal High Court in Abuja has revoked the bail earlier granted to the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, after he failed to appear for the continuation of his trial.
Justice Mohammed Umar delivered the ruling on Tuesday following an application by the prosecution, which argued that the defendant’s absence was unjustified.
During the proceedings, prosecution counsel, Kehinde Akinlolu, informed the court that Sowore was aware of the hearing date but did not attend.
He urged the court to withdraw the defendant’s bail, alleging that Sowore had repeatedly taken steps that delayed the progress of the case.
In his decision, Justice Umar observed that although Sowore had submitted a letter requesting that the matter be adjourned, the correspondence failed to state any reason for the request.
The judge held that the explanation provided was insufficient and consequently revoked the defendant’s bail.
Following the ruling, the court adjourned the case until June 22 for further hearing.
