The Lagos State Government has alerted residents to the possibility of heavy rainfall, flash floods and rising water levels in several parts of the state between June 14 and June 21, 2026.
The warning followed a flood prediction update issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment, which identified 14 locations across Lagos as areas at critical risk of flooding during the period.
According to the advisory, the affected areas include Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Lekki, Ojo, Orile-Agege, Surulere, Agege, Alimosho and Kosofe.
The update, signed by the Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, Usman Bokani, warned that the affected communities could experience intense rainfall, overflowing riverbanks and flash floods.
It classified the listed locations as “Critical Risk Areas” and advised residents to remain vigilant by monitoring flood conditions, identifying evacuation routes and taking steps to protect vulnerable members of their households.
The ministry also cautioned residents against settling or carrying out commercial activities in active floodplains, low-lying drainage channels and areas close to riverbanks, noting that such locations are particularly susceptible to flooding.
Reacting to the forecast, the Lagos State Government assured residents that there was no reason for panic, stressing that extensive flood prevention measures had been implemented across the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Mahamood Adegbite, said the government had sustained year-round maintenance and clearing of primary and secondary drainage systems to improve water flow and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.
According to the government, the ongoing drainage management efforts have helped mitigate the effects of seasonal rains and prevented major flooding incidents since the beginning of the current rainy season.
“These proactive steps have ensured that the state has not suffered any devastating effect that comes with heavy rainfalls since the advent of the rains this year,” the statement said.
The government nevertheless urged residents, particularly those living in flood-prone communities, to remain cautious and comply with safety advisories issued by relevant authorities throughout the forecast period.
