The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the significance of the Hijrah to the Muslim faithful.
According to him, the Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event widely regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history.
He explained that the state government declared the holiday as a demonstration of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community across Oyo State.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state,” the commissioner stated.
Oyelade called on residents to take advantage of the occasion to offer prayers for lasting peace, unity, and progress in Oyo State and Nigeria.
He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, stressing the need for togetherness, mutual understanding, and collective commitment to the development of society.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” he added.
The state government expressed hope that the celebration would further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among residents while promoting harmony and peaceful coexistence across the state.
