The Lagos State Government has strengthened its waste management infrastructure with the addition of 10 new waste compactor trucks aimed at improving sanitation services across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development on Thursday, stating that the vehicles were donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority to support ongoing efforts to improve environmental sustainability.

According to Wahab, the donation reflects the importance of collaboration among government agencies and demonstrates a commitment to addressing the environmental challenges associated with managing a rapidly expanding urban population.

He noted that Lagos currently generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making efficient waste management a critical priority for the state government.

Wahab explained that the administration has abandoned the traditional “collect-and-dump” system in favour of a zero-waste strategy that promotes recycling, reuse and resource recovery.

The commissioner said the newly acquired trucks would be strategically deployed to areas with high waste generation and communities where waste evacuation services require strengthening.

He added that the additional vehicles are expected to improve collection efficiency, reduce response times for waste evacuation, support environmental sanitation programmes and contribute to cleaner surroundings across the state.

Wahab further disclosed that the government has entered into several Memoranda of Understanding with both local and international partners to divert approximately 5,000 metric tonnes of waste from landfills daily through recycling and other recovery initiatives.

The commissioner praised the Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority, Bashir Abiola Are, for facilitating the donation. He described the gesture as consistent with the environmental agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat.

He also urged public institutions, private companies and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at keeping Lagos clean, emphasising that effective waste management requires the collective participation of all residents and organisations.
