The Lagos State Police Command has launched a special tactical security outfit, known as the “Command Sweepers Squad”, to combat rising insecurity and criminal activities in Ikorodu and neighbouring communities.
The initiative was introduced by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, following growing public concerns over criminal incidents across parts of the Ikorodu axis.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the command described the squad as a temporary intervention force aimed at restoring public confidence and strengthening security operations in the affected areas.
According to the statement, the newly established unit is made up of officers drawn from various tactical formations within the police force, including the Rapid Response Squad, Eko Strike Force, Police Mobile Force units, as well as personnel from sister security agencies and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.
The command disclosed that the squad has been stationed in Ijede to ensure rapid deployment and swift response to security threats across Ikorodu and adjoining communities.
To boost operational effectiveness, the police command said the tactical team had been equipped with patrol vehicles and three Armoured Personnel Carriers donated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.
“The Squad has been strategically deployed to identify black spots and criminal hideouts to carry out intelligence-led operations, raids, stop-and-search duties, and confidence-building patrols aimed at flushing out criminal elements,” the statement read.
The police command assured residents that the operations of the squad would be conducted professionally and in line with the rule of law.
It also appealed to members of the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing operations aimed at improving safety across the Ikorodu area.
