A disagreement during a masquerade procession in Ilare, Osun State, has resulted in the death of a man identified as Bukunmi.

The incident occurred on Friday evening during the Egungun festival celebrations.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, Femi, and another individual named Pelumi were in the process of sharing ₦8,000 collected during the procession when the altercation began.

Witnesses reported that a misunderstanding broke out between Bukunmi and Pelumi, who are reportedly members of the same family.

When Femi attempted to intervene and mediate the dispute, Bukunmi allegedly attacked him, striking him in the mouth.

In the ensuing confrontation, Femi reportedly stabbed Bukunmi with a knife.

Following the attack, bystanders rushed the injured man to a hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

As tensions rose at the scene, a mob attempted to attack Femi, but operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) intervened.

The officers rescued the suspect and handed him over to the Esa Oke police division.

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident on Saturday.

He stated that the suspect is currently in police custody and the deceased has been moved to a mortuary for an autopsy.

Ojelabi noted that authorities are conducting a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
