The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced intensified efforts to address the increasing number of accidents involving dispatch riders on major highways across the state.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, disclosed the agency’s strategy on Monday, noting that the move is part of a broader traffic safety advocacy and enforcement initiative.

As an initial step, the agency has formally written to representatives of various dispatch riders’ unions.

Bakare-Oki revealed that LASTMA intends to convene a stakeholders’ engagement session involving courier service operators and riders.

The meeting aims to promote strict adherence to traffic regulations and encourage riders to prioritise both their personal well-being and the safety of other road users.

The general manager emphasised that the Lagos State government remains committed to ensuring the optimal safety and security of lives and property.

He noted that the upcoming engagement will provide a platform for unions and service providers to address concerns and improve overall compliance with traffic laws.

In addition to professional rider engagement, LASTMA is expanding its reach to younger residents through a school traffic advocacy programme.

The initiative is designed to foster road safety awareness and promote responsible behaviour among youths.

According to Bakare-Oki, the agency is being intentional about capturing young minds to ensure long-term safety on Lagos roads.

He reported that between January and March, the agency had already reached approximately 38% to 39% of schools across the state.
