The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a man following an encounter with its officers along the Iseyin/Oyo Road, intensifying concerns over police conduct in recent incidents nationwide.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the incident involved officers from the Border Patrol Unit and a Fulani man riding a motorcycle.

According to the police spokesperson, the situation escalated after the individual allegedly became restive and violent, resulting in a confrontation with the officers.

During the altercation, the man was struck and fell from his motorcycle.

He was subsequently rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he was confirmed dead.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state ordered the immediate detention of all officers involved in the incident, pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation.

The command also directed that an autopsy be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

“Following the incident, the commissioner of police has ordered the detention of all officers involved, pending the outcome of a thorough investigation, which is currently ongoing. The commissioner has also directed that an autopsy be conducted to medically ascertain the exact cause of death,” the statement read.

The police further confirmed that a brief protest broke out in Iseyin shortly after the incident.

However, authorities said the situation was quickly brought under control, with the crowd peacefully dispersed after assurances that justice would be served.
