The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has dismissed claims that it embarrassed former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, over a proposed lecture at the institution.
In a press statement issued on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the university clarified that the invitation to Obi was initiated by a group of students without proper communication with the authorities.
According to the statement, the university was only made aware of the identity and status of the guest on Friday, less than 24 hours before the scheduled event, leaving insufficient time to complete essential preparations.
OAU emphasised that engagements involving high-profile personalities require adequate notice to enable comprehensive planning, particularly in the areas of logistics and security.
This includes coordination with relevant agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure the safety of the guest and the wider university community.
The institution explained that the late notification made it impossible to finalise these arrangements, prompting the decision to withhold approval for the use of Oduduwa Hall, the proposed venue for the lecture.
“The decision was taken purely in the interest of safety, orderliness, and adherence to established protocols governing the use of university facilities,” the statement read, stressing that it should not be interpreted as a slight against Obi.
The university further noted that it holds the former governor in high regard and remains open to hosting him and other distinguished personalities, provided due process is followed.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to fostering intellectual discourse while urging students and stakeholders to comply with established guidelines when organising events on campus.
The management also called on members of the university community and the general public to work collaboratively in ensuring the smooth operation and development of the institution
