Jimoh Ibrahim has officially commenced his duties as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations following the presentation of his letters of credence to Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the development on Tuesday, describing the ceremony as a critical milestone in Nigeria’s international diplomatic engagement.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed that the presentation completes the formal accreditation process.

“He has presented his letters, and it simply means he has started working,” Ebienfa stated.

As Nigeria’s chief diplomatic voice at the UN, Ibrahim is tasked with leading multilateral negotiations and articulating the nation’s positions on global issues, including peace, security, and international development.

Ibrahim’s appointment was part of a broader deployment of 65 ambassadors authorised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March 2026.

This group included 31 career diplomats and 34 political appointees.

Other notable appointments in the recent wave include former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany and former Health Minister Isaac Adewole to Canada.

Before his diplomatic posting, Ibrahim served as the senator representing the Ondo South Senatorial District, following his election to the National Assembly in 2023.

His nomination was confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.

The move is viewed as a strategic effort by the Nigerian government to strengthen its influence and presence within the multilateral global system.
