Former Ondo State Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi has announced his candidacy for the Ondo South Senatorial seat, aiming to commence a fresh term in 2027.
In a statement to journalists in Akure, Ajayi clarified that he is not seeking to replace Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who was recently appointed Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), but to start a new tenure post-2027.
Ajayi, who served as deputy governor under the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has had a political career spanning various parties.
He left APC for PDP in 2020, then defected to ZLP, then returned to PDP in 2024, and finally rejoined APC in January 2026.
Despite losing gubernatorial bids in 2020 and 2024, Ajayi remains optimistic about his senatorial aspirations.
He believes he is the most qualified candidate, citing his extensive political experience from councillor to deputy governor and member of the National Assembly.
Ajayi also argued that it is Ese-Odo Local Government Area’s turn to produce a senator from Ondo South, emphasising the need for the APC to field a popular candidate to boost President Bola Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 presidential election.
