A former member of the House of Representatives, Jelili Amusan, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Amusan made his declaration in a statement released to journalists in Abeokuta on Monday, saying his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to contribute to the continued development of the state and support the policy direction of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The former federal lawmaker, who currently serves as the patron of the Tinubu National Think-Tank, said his ambition is inspired by the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu and aimed at sustaining the gains of the current administration.
“My intention to join the governorship race as the Patron of Tinubu National Think-Tank and Founder of JKA Support Group for PBAT Till 2031 Movement is greatly inspired by the PBAT Renewed Hope Agenda,” Amusan said.
He added that his objective is to ensure that the people of Ogun State continue to benefit from democratic governance through policies that promote economic growth and social development.
Amusan represented the Odeda/Obafemi-Owode and Abeokuta North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for two terms. According to him, his legislative experience and long-standing involvement in public affairs have prepared him for greater responsibilities in governance.
The APC chieftain has previously sought higher political office, having contested the Ogun Central senatorial ticket twice. He also made an earlier attempt to secure the governorship ticket of the state.
He pledged to strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the constitution of the APC in the pursuit of his governorship ambition.
“While I sincerely have the interest to contest the governorship race of Ogun State come 2027, I remain committed, as a responsible and law-abiding citizen, to follow due process and strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and the APC party constitution,” he said.
Amusan also highlighted his private sector background, which spans several decades, noting that it has equipped him with administrative and financial management expertise necessary for effective leadership.
He outlined key priorities for his proposed administration, including job creation, improved access to quality education, enhanced security, and increased agricultural productivity. He also promised to strengthen healthcare delivery and expand infrastructure and transport networks across the state.
According to him, Ogun State’s proximity to Lagos and its growing industrial base present significant opportunities for economic expansion if harnessed through transparent and deliberate leadership.
Amusan’s declaration adds to the list of aspirants seeking the APC ticket ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.
Among those who have publicly indicated interest in the race is a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo.
Other political figures linked with the emerging contest include the member of the House of Representatives representing Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, Gboyega Isiaka, and former federal lawmaker Abiodun Akinlade.
Also reported to have shown interest in the governorship race are Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and former broadcaster Modele Sarafu-Yusuf.
