The Ogun State Government has refuted reports alleging a confrontation between Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Council of Afobajes over the ongoing process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland, describing the claims as false and deliberately misleading.
In an official statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government clarified that the meeting recently held with the Afobajes was consultative, respectful, and consistent with the governor’s long-standing approach to resolving traditional disputes through dialogue.
Akinmade explained that Governor Abiodun has, in the past, engaged constructively with polarized Olori Ebis, leading to their reconciliation and even persuading one of the kingmakers to withdraw a pending court case. He stressed that the recent engagement followed the same pattern of inclusive consultation.
“The discussions focused on matters of mutual concern in the interest of progress in traditional affairs within Ijebuland,” the statement said.
The government categorically denied claims circulating online that the governor issued threats or ultimatums during the meeting.
It also dismissed as fabricated the widely circulated phrase, “No Kuye, No Awujale,” insisting that no member of the Afobajes could corroborate such an allegation because it never occurred.
According to the statement, the rumours are the handiwork of mischief makers seeking to sow discord within the traditional institution and misrepresent the governor’s position.
Reaffirming the administration’s stance, the statement said Governor Abiodun remains fully committed to due process, respect for the autonomy of traditional institutions, and fairness in the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
“The governor has consistently demonstrated the high regard he holds for the Awujale stool,” the statement added, noting that his administration prioritises harmony, dialogue, and the preservation of cultural heritage in Ogun State.
Members of the public, traditional stakeholders, and the media were urged to disregard the unfounded reports and rely solely on verified information from official government sources.
