The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week maintenance programme on the Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, as part of preparatory steps ahead of its eventual demolition and reconstruction for the Phase 2 extension of the Lagos Blue Line Rail project.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed that repair works would commence on Monday, January 19, 2026, and run until May 28, 2026.

According to the government, the maintenance will cover both the Toll and Service Lanes in inbound and outbound directions, focusing primarily on expansion joints and other critical bridge components.

Authorities stressed that the bridge would not be completely shut at any time, with traffic managed through carefully planned diversions across the Toll Lane, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor, and Service Lane.

“The Lagos State Government has released a traffic diversion plan for the maintenance works on the expansion joints and bridge elements of Mazamaza Bridge, both Service Lane and Toll Lane along the Lagos-Badagry Carriageway, inbound and outbound,” the statement said, adding that the works would be executed in phases to minimise traffic disruption.

A preliminary phase scheduled for January 24 to 30 will involve preparing work zones and assessing traffic management requirements. This will be followed by Phases 1 to 4, covering repairs on Badagry-bound lanes between January 31 and March 30, while Phases 5 to 8 will address Lagos-bound lanes from March 31 to June 2.

Motorists have been advised to anticipate lane restrictions and plan their journeys accordingly throughout the duration of the project.

Traffic arrangements

For Badagry-bound traffic during Phases 1 and 2, vehicles will be diverted to the BRT Corridor while repairs are carried out on the Toll Lane, before rejoining it shortly after the construction zone. When work shifts to the BRT Corridor, traffic will temporarily move to the Toll Lane.

In Phases 3 and 4, repairs on the Service Lane will reduce traffic flow to one of the two lanes, with normal access restored once work is completed. The same pattern will apply when maintenance shifts to the Lagos-bound direction in Phases 5 to 8.

Lagos-bound motorists will similarly be diverted between the Toll Lane and BRT Corridor depending on the phase of work, while Service Lane repairs will temporarily reduce traffic to a single lane before full restoration.

Drivers were urged to obey road signs and directives from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to ensure safety and smooth vehicular movement during the maintenance period.

The repair works come amid broader infrastructure plans linked to the Phase 2 expansion of the Lagos Blue Line Rail, a 14-kilometre extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

In December 2024, the Director of Rail Transport at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Olasunkanmi Okusaga, revealed during a progress report aired on Channels Television that structural tests showed the existing bridge lacked the strength to support rail operations.

He explained that the decision had been taken to construct a new Mazamaza Bridge designed to international standards, supported by 66 foundational piers and projected to last at least 75 years, ensuring long-term safety and durability for rail services.
