The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), over their alleged involvement in the drugging and rape of a 20-year-old female undergraduate.
Confirming the development on Monday, the police spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said the case underscores the command’s renewed effort to strengthen its response to sexual offences and other serious crimes.
According to investigators, the victim had honoured an invitation from her longtime friend, 19-year-old Queen Sodo, at her residence. While there, she was allegedly served a drink that was later confirmed to have been laced with drugs, leaving her unconscious.
Ayanlade said preliminary findings showed that once the victim became incapacitated, Sodo allegedly stepped out of the room, invited a male accomplice, and reportedly kept watch while the assault took place.
The incident came to light when a neighbour, alarmed by strange noises from the apartment, intervened and found the victim unconscious with the male suspect present. The undergraduate was rushed for medical care and later referred to a specialist facility, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Both suspects were said to have confessed to their roles, providing detailed accounts of their involvement. Police also recovered key evidence, including the suspected drugged drink, which was identified by both the victim and the accused persons.
“The command assures the public that offenders will face the full weight of the law, regardless of their relationship with victims,” Ayanlade said. He noted that the suspects remain in lawful custody and will be transferred to the Gender Desk Office for further investigation and prosecution.
The spokesperson urged parents and guardians to educate young people on the risks associated with personal relationships, warning that even long-standing friendships can be exploited for criminal purposes.
