Former Oyo State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Prof. Abdul-Rahman Raphael Afonja, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as sustained internal injustices and a lack of appreciation for loyal members.
In a statement made available to journalists, Afonja said his decision followed wide-ranging consultations with political stakeholders and associates across the state. He noted that the move became necessary after years of unacknowledged contributions to the party and to Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
He said the PDP had failed to reward loyalty or address longstanding grievances within its ranks, expressing hope that his departure would compel the party to reflect and reform before more members become disillusioned.
Afonja recalled that he left a senior academic position to serve in Makinde’s cabinet, where he said he prioritised discipline, staff welfare, innovation and project delivery aimed at improving infrastructure across Oyo State. Despite his removal from office, he explained that he remained committed to the PDP, funding campaigns, supporting security arrangements and safeguarding electoral materials during major elections.
He highlighted his involvement in the 2023 general elections and the 2024 local government polls, particularly his personal efforts in protecting the electoral process in Ogbomoso. He also disclosed that he campaigned for Governor Makinde within Hausa-speaking communities in Ibadan and Ogbomoso, leveraging his fluency in the language.
According to him, his loyalty was not reciprocated. He said he received no appointments, civil-service placements or party slots, while individuals who worked against the PDP or allegedly collected money from the opposition were rewarded. Attempts to address these grievances through dialogue, he added, were ignored.
Afonja stated that he is yet to announce his next political move but will make his decision known after further consultations.
