The Nigerian Navy has successfully prevented an attempt by oil thieves to exploit an abandoned oil well at Oke-Agor-Isekun, an island located near the boundary between Ogun and Ondo states.

The Commander of the Naval Base in Epe, Lagos State, Navy Captain Solomon Ohunenese, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that the operation was carried out after receiving credible intelligence about illegal activities at the site.

According to him, intelligence reports indicated that the long-abandoned oil well had become a target for criminal elements seeking to siphon crude oil for illegal trade.

“On Saturday, January 11, 2025, Naval Base Epe received credible intelligence from the Ogun State Government regarding an abandoned oil well situated near the boundary between Ogun and Ondo States. Acting swiftly, NB Epe, in collaboration with officials from the Ogun State Government, conducted a joint visit to Oke-Agor-Isekun. The island, located approximately five kilometers from the Ondo State boundary, has been identified as a hotspot for criminal activities,” the statement read.

Further investigations confirmed that oil thieves had begun illegal siphoning operations, posing serious economic and environmental threats. Crude oil theft not only deprives the government of crucial revenue but also leads to oil spills that can devastate local communities and ecosystems.

Responding to the threat, the Nigerian Navy immediately deployed personnel to the location, securing the site and cordoning off the well to prevent further illegal activities. Captain Ohunenese emphasized the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding national assets and maintaining security in Nigeria’s waterways.
