The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported 69 fatalities and 246 injuries resulting from road accidents across the state during the first quarter of 2026.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed the statistics during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

In addition to the casualties, Bakare-Oki noted that the agency cleared more than 600 accident scenes and resolved over 900 infractions involving trucks and other articulated vehicles during the three-month period.

The authority’s enforcement efforts included 4,900 physical operations.

Furthermore, LASTMA utilised technology-driven enforcement, including Traffic Management Solutions devices, to capture approximately 17,942 offences.

Bakare-Oki emphasised that the agency maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding traffic infractions, adding that all impounded vehicles would be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.

To improve service delivery and reduce travel times for Lagos residents, LASTMA has overhauled its traffic equipment and recovery vehicles.

The agency said it has strategically repositioned these assets to ensure faster response times to traffic incidents.

The authority is also prioritising personnel development through a comprehensive year-long training calendar.

Bakare-Oki stated that the agency plans to train over 1,000 staff members through a combination of internal and external programmes, engaging various consultants to facilitate high-level capacity building.
