A woman has been arrested after correctional officers at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, found substances suspected to be a psychoactive drug concealed in a sachet of Milo beverage.
The woman was reportedly visiting an inmate on death row when the suspected contraband was discovered during routine screening at the facility’s main entrance.
The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) disclosed the incident in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka.
According to the command, the arrest took place at about 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The statement said correctional officers detected the substance during the standard security screening conducted on visitors entering the custodial centre.
The substance was reportedly suspected to be “colos”, a street term commonly used in Nigeria for certain psychoactive substances.
The discovery, according to the NCoS, demonstrated the vigilance of its personnel and the command’s determination to prevent prohibited substances and other contraband from being taken into correctional facilities.
“Following her arrest, she was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution, in accordance with established procedures,” the statement said.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers who made the arrest, describing their response as evidence of alertness and professionalism.
Adesina also reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other criminal activities within custodial facilities.
He stressed that correctional centres were established to facilitate the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates and must not be allowed to become conduits for the circulation of illicit substances.
The command subsequently warned members of the public against attempting to compromise the security of correctional facilities by bringing prohibited items into them.
It said anyone caught engaging in such activities would face the consequences of the law.
