A physically challenged beggar lost his life on Saturday after a container-laden truck reportedly suffered brake failure and ploughed into multiple vehicles along the outbound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The fatal accident occurred at Car Park C in the early hours of the day and involved three vehicles: a Mack truck carrying a container with registration number AGL 374 XX, a loaded DAF truck with registration number AKM 476 XB, and a white Toyota bus bearing registration number AKD 137 YA.
Confirming the incident, the Head of Media of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said preliminary findings and eyewitness accounts indicated that the Mack truck developed brake failure while approaching a turning point.
According to him, the out-of-control truck rammed into vehicles negotiating the turn before striking a physically challenged beggar in a wheelchair, killing him instantly.
“According to eyewitness accounts, the MACK truck had a brake failure and hit vehicles negotiating a turning, and a beggar on wheels chair, slicing his body,” Akinbiyi said.
He added that the crash severely disrupted traffic on the outbound Lagos carriageway, with emergency responders immediately mobilised to the scene.
“Traffic outbound Lagos route is highly affected. TRACE Operatives, FRSC, and the police are on the ground doing the needful,” he stated.
The latest tragedy comes barely a day after multiple crashes occurred on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing heavy gridlock and leaving many motorists stranded.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had confirmed that one person died while two others sustained injuries in Friday’s crashes, which occurred on both the inbound and outbound sections of the expressway.
The recurring accidents have renewed concerns over road safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, particularly incidents linked to brake failure involving heavy-duty trucks.
