The ancient city of Akure came alive on Monday as political leaders, traditional rulers, and eminent Nigerians gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the centenarian as a moral compass and a living witness to Nigeria’s political and historical evolution.

According to the president, Fasoranti’s life reflects courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to public service and national development.

Tinubu said the elder statesman belongs to a generation that shaped the course of history rather than merely observing it, adding that societies become vulnerable when leaders lose compassion for ordinary citizens.

He commended the Afenifere leader for consistently standing with the marginalised and amplifying the voices of the underrepresented.

“Pa Fasoranti’s lifetime spans Nigeria’s colonial era, independence, military rule, interrupted democratic transitions, and the present constitutional order, yet he remained firmly rooted in justice and unity,” the president stated.

Tinubu also praised the elder statesman’s contributions to education, democracy, and nation-building, while praying for the centenarian’s continued good health and a lasting legacy.

Speaking at the event, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described Fasoranti as a towering moral authority and living institution whose century-long life embodies discipline, integrity, courage, and selfless service.

Aiyedatiwa said the celebration was not merely about longevity but a recognition of a life deeply connected to Nigeria’s moral and historical journey.

The governor noted that Fasoranti remained steadfast through various political transitions without compromising his principles, describing him as a bridge between generations and a custodian of enduring values.

He urged younger Nigerians to emulate the elder statesman’s discipline, honesty, and commitment to service, stressing that lasting greatness is founded on integrity rather than temporary fame.

“Happy 100th birthday, our own living legend, Pa Fasoranti,” Aiyedatiwa declared.

Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, in his goodwill message, described the occasion as a celebration of dignity, honour, integrity, and resilience.

Mimiko said Fasoranti exemplifies humility and principled leadership, revealing that the elder statesman personally insisted that the event be held at his residence.

He described the celebrant as a complete man whose life continues to offer enduring lessons in leadership, character, and public service.

Other dignitaries at the event included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun; former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi; former Osun State Deputy Governor Iyiola Omisore; Afenifere chieftain Sehinde Arogbofa; Ekiti State Secretary to the Government Habibat Adubiaro; lawmakers; and top government officials.

Traditional rulers present included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, represented by Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi; the Olowo of Owo and Chairman of the Council of Obas, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye; the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi; and the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo
