The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed Thursday’s power outage across Lagos and surrounding areas to a voltage instability on the national grid, assuring residents and businesses that efforts are underway to restore full electricity supply.

In a statement issued on Thursday, TCN disclosed that the incident occurred at about 8:19 a.m. when the national grid experienced a sudden voltage disturbance that quickly spread through the Lagos transmission corridor.

According to the company, the instability resulted in the loss of some generating stations, triggered outages on critical transmission lines, and disrupted electricity supply to Lagos and its environs.

To prevent the situation from escalating into a broader grid disturbance, the National Control Centre immediately directed several power generation companies to reduce their output.

TCN explained that the measure was necessary to curb a rise in system frequency, stabilise the grid, and protect the national electricity network from further disruptions.

The development prompted swift intervention from the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, who convened an emergency meeting involving senior officials of the TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

The meeting focused on coordinating immediate restoration efforts and identifying measures to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.

Providing an update on recovery operations, TCN confirmed that the Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line, one of the facilities affected during the disturbance, has been successfully restored and is currently transmitting bulk electricity.

The company added that engineers drawn from its Benin and Omotoso subregions are working to repair outstanding faults on the Benin-Omotoso 330kV transmission line, a critical infrastructure serving the Lagos power network.

TCN said the ongoing repairs are aimed at ensuring the complete restoration of bulk power supply to the Lagos complex in the shortest possible time.

The utility provider expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the outage, acknowledging the impact on households, businesses, and other electricity consumers affected by the disruption.

It further assured the public that the Ministry of Power, TCN, and other relevant stakeholders are collaborating to rectify the faults and restore normal transmission operations along the affected corridor.

The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining grid stability and improving the reliability of power supply across the country.
