The Lagos State Government has declared the area surrounding the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building, which was razed by fire on December 24, unsafe for public access, as emergency operations continue at the scene.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement shared on his official X account on Friday, confirmed that eight people lost their lives in the inferno.
According to him, five of the victims have been identified, while efforts are ongoing to establish the identities of three others. He added that 13 persons were rescued alive from the rubble.
Speaking during an on-site assessment, Sanwo-Olu extended condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated that strict safety restrictions remain in force around the affected area.
“No business or unauthorised activity should be taking place there. The area remains unsafe, and only first responders are permitted on the site,” the governor said.
He noted that emergency personnel are still painstakingly combing through the debris, particularly at the rear section of the collapsed structure, to ensure that no one remains trapped.
To improve coordination and public communication, the state government has established an information centre at the site, staffed by officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
Preliminary findings by authorities indicated that unsafe practices contributed significantly to the scale of the disaster. These include the improper use of power generators and the construction of shops dangerously close to electrical transformers.
Following a comprehensive structural integrity assessment, Sanwo-Olu announced that the GNI building would be demolished, alongside some adjoining structures deemed hazardous.
“Following a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods. Some surrounding buildings must also be removed. While these are difficult decisions, we must prioritise the safety of lives above all else,” he said.
The governor assured residents of the state that the government remains fully committed to managing the recovery process, enforcing safety standards, and providing support to families affected by the tragedy.
“My heart is with every family affected. Safety must come first,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
