The Osun State Police Command has arrested three suspected political thugs over an alleged assassination plot targeting the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign council, Hon. Oluwole Oke.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed this while parading the suspects on Thursday, saying the arrests were part of the command’s ongoing crackdown on cultism, political thuggery and other violent crimes threatening peace and public safety across the state.

According to the police commissioner, intelligence-led operations resulted in the arrest of Olamilekan Oriyomi, 24, Ayotunde Ikupolati, 44, and Femi Fakinleye, 31, over their alleged involvement in the failed attack.

Gotan said the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after Oke and other APC members paid a courtesy visit to the Ajalaye of Ipetu-Ijesa before proceeding to the town hall for a meeting with party supporters.

He alleged that shortly after the meeting, a group of suspected political thugs and members of the Eiye confraternity, allegedly led by Oriyomi, blocked the exit route of Oke’s convoy.

According to the commissioner, Oriyomi allegedly produced an English-made Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition and attempted to point the weapon at Oke before the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) intervened.

“The prompt action of the DPO led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the firearm and ammunition, while other members of the group fled the scene,” Gotan said.

He added that further investigations led to the arrest of Ikupolati and Fakinleye in connection with the alleged plot.

The police commissioner also disclosed that Oriyomi allegedly confessed during interrogation that he obtained the firearm from one Busuyi Akinwole, who is currently on the run.

Gotan assured residents that the command remains committed to tackling political violence and other criminal activities, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects linked to the case.
