The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned residents of Lagos, Ogun and six other coastal states to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist throughout Tuesday.

In its weather outlook for Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the agency said communities across Nigeria’s southern region should expect moderate to heavy rainfall during the afternoon and evening after experiencing thunderstorms and light showers earlier in the day.

NiMet identified Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states as areas with a high risk of flash flooding, particularly in coastal and low-lying communities.

According to the agency, continuous rainfall is likely to increase the chances of flooding, prompting residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

“Wet weather conditions are expected throughout the day. Continuous rainfall may result in flash flooding in coastal and low-lying communities,” NiMet stated.

The agency urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during the afternoon when heavy downpours and gusty winds could reduce visibility and make driving hazardous.

Residents were also advised to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters, warning that moving water can be deeper and more dangerous than it appears.

As part of its safety guidance, NiMet cautioned members of the public against taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms because of the heightened risk of lightning strikes.

Beyond the southern states, the agency forecast unsettled weather across parts of the North-Central and Northern regions later in the day.

It said increasing cloud cover, widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa and several neighbouring states during the afternoon and evening.

NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather information before flight operations to ensure passenger safety and efficient scheduling amid the expected adverse weather conditions.

The agency urged the public to continue monitoring official weather updates and comply with safety advisories as the rainy season intensifies across the country.
