The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has commissioned a state-of-the-art multi-purpose building at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Institute of Maritime Studies.

The project, a collaboration with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), aims to bolster human capital and institutional capacity within the sector.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, Oyetola described the facility as a vital milestone for national prosperity.

He emphasised that because over 90% of Nigeria’s trade is conducted via maritime channels, the blue economy serves as a “national economic lifeline”.

“The future of the blue economy will be shaped not just by natural endowments but by the quality of minds we nurture within institutions such as this,” Oyetola stated, noting the government’s commitment to knowledge-driven development.

NIMASA Director-General Dayo Mobereola remarked that the project reflects a shared vision for a more competitive maritime sector.

He noted that the partnership would enhance data-driven insights and position Nigeria as a regional hub for maritime research and education.

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunshola confirmed that the building represents the first phase of a larger complex.

She stated that the institute is prepared to serve as the “engine room” of the country’s blue economy through advanced training and global research collaborations.

The new facility features modern lecture rooms, specialised laboratories, and administrative spaces designed to support high-level maritime research and innovation.
