Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed profound grief over the death of veteran journalist, renowned public affairs analyst and Ibadan chief, Oloye Lekan Alabi, describing his passing as a major loss to Oyo State and Nigeria.
Alabi, the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland and a press secretary to four successive governors in the old Oyo State, died on Saturday morning in Lagos at the age of 76.
His death was confirmed in a statement issued by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko. Family sources disclosed that the respected journalist and elder statesman would be buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.
Reacting to the news, Governor Makinde paid glowing tribute to Alabi’s decades of service to journalism, governance, Yoruba culture and community development.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor described the late Alabi as a man whose life was defined by wisdom, integrity and an unwavering commitment to truth and public service.
“Chief Lekan Alabi was a man of immense wisdom, integrity, and dedication. His voice carried the weight of truth, his counsel was sought by leaders across generations, and his commitment to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values was unwavering. Oyo State has lost one of its finest sons,” Makinde said.
The governor noted that Alabi’s contributions transcended journalism, saying he distinguished himself as a respected elder statesman, cultural icon and community leader whose influence would endure for generations.
Makinde extended his condolences to the bereaved family, friends and associates of the late journalist, as well as the people of Ibadan and the entire Oyo State.
He urged those mourning the veteran journalist to find comfort in the enduring legacy of his service and dedication to humanity.
“The government and people of Oyo State stand with the Alabi family at this difficult time. May the Almighty grant them strength and comfort, and may Chief Lekan Alabi’s soul rest in perfect peace,” the governor added.
During his distinguished career, Alabi served as press secretary to former governors of Oyo State, earning widespread respect for his professionalism and contributions to public communication.
Beyond journalism, he played an active role in the traditional institution as the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, where he was regarded as a committed custodian of Ibadan’s history and cultural heritage.
The family is expected to announce further details of his burial and other funeral activities.
