The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has confirmed the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, following injuries he sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.

Otabor, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, was reportedly attacked alongside his friends off campus on the night of May 29, 2026.

In a statement released on Thursday by the university’s Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the institution described the incident as tragic and expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death.

According to the statement, the university received reports of the attack shortly after the incident and immediately activated support measures for the victim during his treatment.

“The Management of Lagos State University received with profound sadness the news of the death of one of its students, OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph (Matric No. 240341269) of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos,” the statement said.

The university disclosed that the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, coordinated the institution’s response by briefing the Vice-Chancellor and maintaining communication with medical personnel handling the student’s treatment throughout his hospitalisation.

Otabor, however, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Following his death, representatives of the university reportedly visited members of his family and also engaged officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital as well as law enforcement authorities over the incident.

LASU said it was working closely with security agencies to ensure that those behind the attack are identified and prosecuted.

“The University is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement added.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, also extended condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends and colleagues on behalf of the university community.

The institution further prayed for the repose of Otabor’s soul while calling for justice over the deadly attack.
