The Lagos State Government has begun plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in a move designed to improve accessibility, mobility and social inclusion across the state.
The initiative was discussed during a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored a framework for developing and implementing the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the proposal as a significant milestone in advancing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of creating “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
According to him, the specialised number plates would make it easier to identify vehicles belonging to persons with disabilities, improve accessibility and facilitate smoother movement across the state.
Muri-Okunola also noted that the initiative reflects the principles of inclusive governance and demonstrates the state government’s commitment to ensuring that no resident is excluded from public services.
He revealed that the agency had already initiated discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposed number plates and would commence the necessary administrative procedures in collaboration with LASODA to ensure the project is successfully implemented.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the visit was aimed at opening strategic discussions on introducing specialised number plates specifically designed for the disability community in Lagos.
She explained that the scheme is expected to cater to all categories of persons with disabilities, while also extending eligibility to parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers.
According to Oyetunde-Lawal, the identification system will improve recognition, accessibility and support for members of the disability community, while strengthening government efforts to promote equal opportunities.
She added that the proposed number plates would further reinforce Lagos State’s commitment to building a society where persons with disabilities are recognised, respected and empowered to participate fully in social and economic activities.
Calling for broad support, she urged stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a collective responsibility and back policies that protect the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to driving the initiative forward, noting that it aligns with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which established LASODA to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.
The meeting was attended by directors and senior management officials from both LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency as discussions continue on the rollout of the proposed disability-friendly vehicle number plates.
