The Lagos State Government has arrested 45 beggars, including minors, during fresh enforcement operations carried out in different parts of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development on Wednesday through a statement shared on his official X handle.

According to Wahab, the enforcement teams apprehended 22 beggars in the Oshodi and Agege areas, with those arrested comprising adults and a number of teenagers.

He further revealed that another operation conducted at CMS led to the arrest of 23 persons, including 14 adults and nine children.

“Earlier today, in a separate enforcement operation, our team apprehended 22 beggars at Oshodi and Agege, comprising adults and a few teenagers. Additionally, 14 adults and 9 children were apprehended at CMS,” Wahab stated.

The commissioner noted that the state government had continued its environmental and sanitation enforcement drives across Lagos, adding that clearance operations were still ongoing in other locations, including Admiralty Way in Lekki and Addo Road in Ajah.

The latest arrests come amid intensified enforcement activities by the Lagos State Government aimed at addressing environmental violations, street trading, and related offences across the state.

Wahab disclosed that within a one-year period, the state recorded a total of 10,634 arrests linked to various environmental and sanitation offences.

Breaking down the figures, he said 5,715 individuals were arrested for illegal highway crossing, while 3,886 others were apprehended for offences ranging from street trading and cart pushing to environmental pollution.

He added that 102 persons were arrested for open defecation, while another 931 individuals were apprehended over waste management-related violations in different parts of Lagos.

The state government has repeatedly maintained that the enforcement operations are part of broader efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness, improve public safety, and ensure compliance with sanitation regulations across the metropolis.
