The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan has confirmed the safe release of the abducted 300-level law student, Abolarin Tomisin, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety within the university community.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement signed by the SUG President, Temidayo Adeboye, who said the development had been officially verified by the relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation involved.

According to Adeboye, Tomisin and the other individuals released alongside her are currently undergoing post-release procedures before returning to their respective destinations.

“We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon,” he said.

The union expressed appreciation to security agencies, the University of Ibadan management, the leadership of the Scripture Union, and all individuals who played roles in securing the victims’ release.

“The Students’ Union sincerely appreciates the security agencies, university management, the leadership of the Scripture Union, and everyone whose dedication contributed to this successful outcome.

“We also thank members of the university community for their prayers, patience, solidarity and unwavering support throughout this period. Your compassion and unity have been truly encouraging.

“As we celebrate this welcome news, we remain grateful to God and pray for the complete healing, restoration and well-being of everyone affected,” Adeboye added.

Tomisin was kidnapped in June while returning from a religious programme in Imo State.

The SUG had earlier disclosed that she was travelling with Uwem Cosmos, the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, and other delegates who attended the organisation’s national conference at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.

Adeboye had also revealed that eight people, including Tomisin, were abducted during the journey.

He noted that Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship and Vice-President of its University of Ibadan chapter, was the only UI student among those reported missing, dismissing social media claims that suggested multiple students from the institution had been kidnapped.

Her release is expected to bring relief to students, staff and family members who had closely followed developments since the abduction was reported.
