The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates, stressing that only the Board has the legal authority to issue official admission letters.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

According to a statement issued by JAMB on Monday, Aina said the Board remained the only legally empowered body to issue official admission letters to candidates offered admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.

He expressed concern that many candidates accept admission documents from institutions as genuine because such documents appear to have been formally issued by the schools.

Aina urged institutions still issuing their own admission letters to desist from the practice, describing it as an “ignoble act”.

He also stressed the responsibility of tertiary institutions to ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

The registrar recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that all admissions into tertiary institutions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

He warned that any admission processed outside the approved platform was illegal and invalid, stressing that institutions could not substitute their own admission letters for official letters issued by JAMB.

According to him, once a candidate accepts an admission offer through CAPS, the institution is expected to ensure that the admission is properly processed and recognised by JAMB.

Aina further explained that only admissions processed and recognised through CAPS would be accepted for purposes including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He therefore called on tertiary institutions to adhere strictly to established admission procedures, saying compliance would help prevent candidates from being misled and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary education admission system.
