Ikeja Electric Plc has begun refunding customers who previously paid for electricity meters under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) programme, with eligible customers receiving the reimbursements as credits on their electricity vending transactions.

The electricity distribution company announced the development during its September virtual stakeholder engagement, a monthly forum used to provide operational updates, educate customers and address concerns affecting service delivery.

Under the arrangement, refunds will be applied to eligible customers’ vending transactions over the approved repayment period.

Customers can check the progress of their refunds online using either their meter number or account number.

Ikeja Electric said its refund dashboard provides information including the original meter cost, number of refunds made, monthly refund amount, total amount refunded and the date of the latest refund.

Customers will also be able to access the applicable refund token, which the company said would be sent to their registered telephone number or email address.

The company advised customers who encounter problems with their MAP refunds to use its official complaint channels or visit their nearest undertaking office for assistance.

Ikeja Electric currently provides MAP-related customer services and refund information through its website.

Refunds for MAP meters form part of the regulatory framework under which customers who financed meters are reimbursed through electricity credits.

Earlier NERC rules provided for the cost of a prepaid MAP meter to be spread across 120 equal instalments, with reimbursement made through energy credits based on the prevailing tariff when customers vend electricity.

Ikeja Electric warns against unauthorised electrical work

Beyond the refund programme, Ikeja Electric used the stakeholder session to warn customers against employing unauthorised electricians to work on its network and electrical infrastructure.

Olaniyi Olayiwola, Head of Quality, Health, Safety & Environment at Ikeja Electric, said recent incidents involving unsafe electrical activities had resulted in fatalities.

He urged customers not to allow unqualified or unauthorised individuals to climb Ikeja Electric poles, work on power lines, interfere with electrical installations or engage in illegal connections.

“Please do not engage electricians to climb Ikeja Electric poles. If you see someone carrying out unsafe activities around our infrastructure, kindly report to us,” Olayiwola said.

According to him, customers should not attempt to confront or intervene directly when they notice dangerous activities around electricity infrastructure. Instead, they should report such incidents through the company’s designated safety emergency channels.

Olayiwola also called on residents and communities to maintain sufficient clearance around high-voltage power lines, warning that encroachment on electricity infrastructure and inadequate right-of-way remained significant safety hazards.

Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, meanwhile, urged customers to rely on the company’s official communication and complaint platforms for accurate information and assistance.

“Our engagement with customers goes beyond providing information. It is about ensuring that our customers have the knowledge and channels they need to stay safe, seek assistance and get their concerns properly addressed,” Okotie said.

Ikeja Electric’s official website lists customer-service resources covering metering, MAP registration, refunds and other electricity-related services.
