The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two students over allegations of cyberbullying the institution’s suspended Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a statement published on the university’s official news portal on Friday.
The statement was issued by the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Tajudeen Opoola.
According to the university, the affected students, Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel, allegedly conspired to cyberbully Adio by publishing details of his private affairs online after he reportedly failed to meet their financial demands.
The institution said the conduct was unacceptable and capable of damaging the reputation of the university.
It noted that preliminary findings prompted the decision to suspend the students pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
FUOYE management stated that it remains committed to maintaining discipline and safeguarding the institution’s image, adding that any behaviour capable of bringing the university into disrepute would not be tolerated.
“Investigation into the matter is ongoing,” the statement indicated, while directing the two students to proceed on suspension with immediate effect.
The latest development comes days after the university suspended Adio and a deputy director in the Students Affairs Division over allegations of extortion.
The suspended SUG president was accused of indirect involvement in the collection of ₦1,000 from newly admitted students for practical sessions.
University authorities alleged that about ₦700,000 linked to the exercise was traced to his personal bank account.
Following his suspension, an explicit video allegedly involving Adio surfaced online and quickly gained traction across social media platforms, generating widespread reactions.
The controversy also attracted the attention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which intervened amid growing public debate surrounding the incident.
FUOYE has not disclosed when the investigation into the cyberbullying allegations will be concluded, but reiterated its resolve to enforce disciplinary measures against individuals found culpable of misconduct.
