Accident reportedly cause when the fatigued driver lost control and rammed into the stationary truck

Five people were on Tuesday confirmed dead, while 12 others injured when a Mazda bus with Registration Number SMK685YG rammed into a stationary Howo Truck around Foursquare Gospel Church Campground, Ajebo, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the OgunState Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe, the accident occurred around 1.07 pm.

The bus driver, according to reports, slept off due to fatigue and lost control of the vehicle which got it off track and rammed into the truck.

Okpe added that the injured victims were taken Victory Hospital, Ogere-Remo in Ikene Local Government of the State, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.

โ€œThe fatal crash occurred at about 1307 hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

โ€œA total of 18 persons were involved which comprised of 10 male adults and 08 female adults and 12 people were injured (10 male and 02 female) and unfortunately 05 persons were recorded dead from the crash ( 04 male and 01 female adult).

โ€œThe suspected causes of the fatal crash were tyre bust, speed and fatigue which led to loss of control because the driver slept off on the wheel and ran into a moving truck.

โ€œThe injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo,โ€ the statement read in parts.

While commenting on the incident, the Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, urged motorists to shun excessive speeding and always ensure that their vehicles are in good condition.

Uga advised drivers to always take sufficient rest before coming behind the wheels. He also encourage passengers to always be on alert to correct any abnormalities they notice in the drivers, especially when such driver is seen dozing while driving.
