Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has paid glowing tribute to his late predecessor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, describing him as a visionary leader whose ideals continue to shape governance in the state and beyond.
In a statement issued to journalists on Saturday in Akure to commemorate the second anniversary of Akeredolu’s death, Aiyedatiwa said the former governor’s leadership philosophy and policy choices left enduring footprints in Nigeria’s democratic and security architecture.
According to him, Akeredolu was a foremost advocate of state policing and a driving force behind the collective resolve of South-West governors to establish the South-West Security Network, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps. He noted that the initiative significantly strengthened regional security and altered national discourse on subnational security coordination.
“Akeredolu’s bold stance on decentralised and intelligence-led policing helped redefine Nigeria’s approach to internal security and laid the groundwork for ongoing national conversations on state police,” the governor said.
Reflecting on their long-standing political association, Aiyedatiwa described the late governor as a leader deeply committed to mentorship, institutional stability, and orderly, constitutional succession. He said Akeredolu consistently emphasised leadership development and succession planning, demonstrating a deliberate effort to groom future leaders and sustain democratic norms.
The governor acknowledged that Akeredolu’s trust and mentorship had a profound influence on his own public service journey, shaping his leadership values and approach to governance.
“As government and people of Ondo State, we remember and honour Arakunrin Akeredolu on the second anniversary of his passing. We celebrate his passion for development and his unwavering advocacy for justice, equity, and unity,” Aiyedatiwa stated.
He further pledged the continued support of the Ondo State Government for the foundation established by the Akeredolu family to immortalise the late leader’s legacy, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Aiyedatiwa also urged residents of the state to draw inspiration from Akeredolu’s courage, service and principled leadership, noting that his values remain a guiding compass for governance in Ondo State.
