Governor Dapo Abiodun has formally presented Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, a.k.a Yayi, to stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun West as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
The presentation took place during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday at the Empire Ground in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area, with the Ogun State APC Chairman, Yemi Sanusi, members of the party’s state executive committee, and other stakeholders in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun said the decision to support a candidate from Ogun West was aimed at addressing a longstanding political imbalance in the state, noting that the senatorial district has not produced a governor since the creation of Ogun State nearly 50 years ago.
According to him, the consensus arrangement emerged after extensive consultations among party leaders and stakeholders and was subsequently ratified during a state caucus meeting held in Abeokuta, where Senator Adeola received unanimous endorsement.
Abiodun described the emergence of a consensus candidate as a major political development and said the process could serve as a model for political parties in other states.
He called on party members to remain united ahead of the elections and assured aspirants who were not selected that the party would adequately recognise and compensate all “serious candidates”.
The governor also appreciated the people of Yewaland for their support during the 2023 governorship election and pledged continued equitable distribution of developmental projects across the state.
He further announced that the party’s direct primary elections would begin on Friday and urged members to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions capable of undermining the credibility of the exercise.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Adeola thanked the APC leadership and supporters for the confidence reposed in him, promising not to disappoint the party.
“I want, on behalf of myself, my family, and supporters across the APC, to accept this endorsement by the people of the Ogun West Senatorial District as the gubernatorial candidate of our great party ahead of the February 6, 2027, governorship election,” he said.
“I do not take this endorsement for granted, and I sincerely appreciate the leadership of the APC for this great honour.”
The senator also acknowledged the mentorship of President Bola Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, while describing Governor Abiodun as a role model.
Adeola pledged to embark on a statewide tour of all 236 wards after the primaries and urged party members to remain united to secure victory for the APC in the 2027 governorship election.
