President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, describing the late Afenifere leader as an elder statesman whose life was defined by integrity, discipline and commitment to Nigeria’s progress.

Fasoranti, a prominent Yoruba leader and former Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State, died on Tuesday at the age of 100.

In a condolence statement issued on Monday, Tinubu commiserated with the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, the Southwest and members of Afenifere over the death.

The President described Fasoranti as “an icon, a beacon of principle” and one of the last major figures of the progressive political tradition associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

According to Tinubu, Fasoranti’s 100-year life reflected integrity, discipline, selflessness and an unwavering commitment to the Yoruba people and the unity and development of Nigeria.

He recalled that Fasoranti began his career as an educationist and principal before serving as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State and later emerging as the leader of Afenifere.

Tinubu said the late elder statesman remained committed to true federalism and social justice throughout his public life.

“Baba made immense contributions to this country and, at the risk of his life, fought for the democracy we enjoy today,” the President said.

Tinubu also praised Fasoranti’s disciplined lifestyle, adherence to principle and commitment to causes he considered noble, adding that Nigeria would miss his “voice of wisdom, moral authority, and fatherly counsel.”

The President recalled visiting Fasoranti at his Akure residence in 2022 to inform him of his decision to contest the presidency.

According to Tinubu, Fasoranti prayed for his presidential ambition and told him he would become President during the elder statesman’s lifetime.

“Pa Fasoranti told me I would be President in his lifetime, and God answered his prayer,” Tinubu said.

He added that he had hoped Fasoranti would live long enough to witness his second term and the economic growth and prosperity he expects to achieve.

Tinubu also recalled celebrating Fasoranti’s 100th birthday on May 11, describing the centenary not merely as a celebration of longevity but of a life and legacy marked by honour.

“He lived a fulfilled life and left indelible footprints in the sands of time,” the President said.

Tinubu expressed gratitude to God for Fasoranti’s long life and service, while praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his family and other mourners.

The death of Fasoranti has drawn tributes from political leaders and groups across the Southwest, with many recognising his longstanding role in Yoruba affairs and Nigeria’s democratic development.
