The Ondo State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ADMINSERV Ltd to introduce electric buses and charging infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and modernise mobility across the state.

The pilot scheme will begin in Akure with five electric buses, while charging stations will be installed at selected bus stops in the state capital.

The infrastructure is expected to serve both the buses and other owners of electric vehicles.

Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, disclosed this on Monday after the signing of the agreement, describing the initiative as a new approach to addressing rising transport costs in the state.

Ogunyemi said the charging facilities would be open to individuals, organisations and other users of electric vehicles, rather than being restricted to buses operated under the ADMINSERV scheme.

“This is the first time that this is happening in Ondo State. They want to use those bus stops as charging points for electric vehicles. This would reduce the cost of transportation drastically,” he said.

The pilot operation is expected to cover selected routes in Akure, with further expansion planned across the state if the initiative proves successful.

Ogunyemi said government was pursuing electric mobility alongside Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as alternative energy sources for transportation.

According to him, CNG infrastructure is also being developed in the state, including a facility around the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and another in Ore, with plans to extend alternative-energy infrastructure across Ondo’s three senatorial districts.

Managing Director of ADMINSERV, Peter Nnamani, said the company, established in 2025, specialises in technology-driven transportation solutions and was developing an artificial intelligence-enabled application to support the proposed transport system.

Nnamani said the electric bus project was designed to tackle high transportation costs, delays, environmental pollution and security concerns through scheduled bus operations and digital monitoring.

He projected that monthly transportation expenditure for users could fall from about ₦9,000 to between ₦5,000 and ₦6,000 under the proposed system.

The buses and drivers would be monitored digitally, while passengers would be able to access the service through an application. Commuters without smartphones would also use rechargeable smart cards.

Nnamani said the buses would operate on fixed schedules to reduce waiting times and improve punctuality.

The company also expects the project to create employment through the construction and management of charging facilities, as well as the recruitment of drivers and other personnel.

He said the Ondo project would be ADMINSERV’s first electric bus operation in Nigeria.
