The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged woman seen in a viral video allegedly threatening and cursing police officers following her arrest over the sale of cannabis, popularly known as Indian hemp.
The incident reportedly occurred in Ijebu Igbo, headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
In the video, the woman, dressed in a green gown, was initially seen seated inside a vehicle while angrily confronting the officers who had allegedly arrested her.
She accused the police of repeatedly harassing her and questioned why she was being targeted over the alleged sale of cannabis.
“Why are you troubling us, are we the only ones selling Indian hemp? And you have continued to harass us repeatedly; it will never be well with you,” she said in Yoruba.
The situation escalated when the woman came down from the vehicle holding a knife and moved towards a young woman believed to be one of the police officers recording the confrontation.
The video subsequently went viral on social media, prompting reactions from members of the public.
Confirming the development on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the woman had been arrested.
“The suspect has been arrested and the matter is already under investigation,” Babaseyi said.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), said the suspect was expected to be charged to court by the police on Friday.
Ogungbade said he contacted the state Commissioner of Police after seeing the viral video and was informed that the woman would be arraigned.
“I have contacted the CP over the viral video and I was told that the woman will be charged to court today,” he said.
Police authorities have not disclosed the identity of the woman or provided further details about the circumstances surrounding her arrest and the alleged cannabis sale.
