The family of late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force has commenced a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved a petition submitted by the Aloba family seeking a comprehensive re-investigation and forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death, according to the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe.
Ogungbe disclosed this in a statement dated September 29, 2026, following the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into the case.
The lawyer said the Aloba family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and that it was received at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 7.
According to him, the petition raised concerns over inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested a comprehensive forensic examination of the events surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Disu subsequently approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action.
The family was later informed that officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau had been assigned to conduct the investigation.
Ogungbe said a representative of the family had already been invited and engaged with the new team of investigators.
He added that the family had continued to follow up on the investigation and remained actively involved in the process.
The clarification became necessary after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25.
The suit was filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, which had sought an order compelling the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.
Ogungbe stressed that the court case was distinct from the petition submitted by the Aloba family and was neither filed by the family nor instituted with its authority or consent.
The family, therefore, urged the public not to interpret the dismissal of the suit as an end to the separate police investigation initiated through its petition.
According to the lawyer, the family would continue to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant documents, information, witnesses and other materials that could assist the probe.
It also called on the police to conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, while examining all relevant persons and circumstances connected to Mohbad’s death.
The family said it was not seeking to prejudge the outcome of the investigation or conduct a “trial by media”, but wanted a credible, comprehensive and transparent process capable of establishing the facts surrounding the singer’s death.
Mohbad died in Lagos on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.
The family said the latest development meant that the police re-investigation remained active despite the outcome of the separate court case.
