Operatives of the Osun State Police Command have arrested three suspects after intercepting a vehicle allegedly conveying substances suspected to be Indian hemp along the Moro-Ife Road.
The command said the suspected illicit consignment was being transported to Ogbomoso in Oyo State when the vehicle conveying it broke down along the road.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement obtained in Osogbo on Friday.
According to the statement, operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Team E, were conducting a routine patrol on August 30, 2026, when they encountered a silver-coloured Toyota Sienna Space Bus, with registration number BGT 81 OLG, abandoned by the roadside after breaking down.
The officers reportedly became suspicious and conducted checks around the vehicle.
Ojelabi said the driver, identified as 38-year-old Awo Omotayo, later arrived at the scene in a red Nissan Cabstar vehicle, registration number EPE 299 YJ, to tow the faulty Sienna.
He was accompanied by 22-year-old Abayomi Suleiman, who was driving the Cabstar, and Oluwatayo Samuel.
A search of the Sienna reportedly led to the discovery of several bags containing weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
The police subsequently arrested the three men and recovered the suspected illicit substance, the Sienna and the towing vehicle for further investigation.
During interrogation, Omotayo allegedly told investigators that a man identified as Baba Ibo, who operates around Garage Olode in Osun State, had engaged him to transport the substance to Ogbomoso.
He reportedly said Baba Ibo had the contact details of the person expected to receive the consignment after its arrival in Ogbomoso.
The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Zungura, has consequently ordered a thorough investigation into the case.
Zungura directed detectives to establish the source of the suspected illicit substance and identify its intended recipient.
The police command also said efforts were underway to arrest Baba Ibo and other individuals suspected to be connected with the alleged trafficking operation.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist the police in tracking fleeing suspects and tackling the trafficking of prohibited substances across Osun State.
