The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has contained a fire outbreak at Purple Crown Hotel on Balogun Street, along Awolowo Road, Ikeja, with no casualty recorded.
The agency said the fire, which was reported at about 9:52 a.m. on Saturday, affected a room on the first floor of the hotel.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency’s Tiger Squad, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police, arrived at the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the distress call.
According to him, responders found that the affected room had been severely damaged by the fire, while significant fire and smoke damage was also recorded in part of the building.
Oke-Osanyintolu said preliminary findings indicated that the fire might have been caused by an electrical fault in the affected room.
He said all hotel guests and staff were evacuated safely to a designated muster point, where a roll call was conducted under the supervision of emergency responders and police officers to account for all occupants.
“There was no loss of life and no injury recorded. All hotel guests and staff were safely evacuated from the building to the designated muster point,” he said.
The permanent secretary said the joint response operation successfully contained and extinguished the fire, while also preventing it from spreading to adjoining rooms.
Following the incident, access to the entire building was restricted as a precaution because of the volume of smoke and the extent of the fire damage.
LASEMA said the affected section of the hotel had been cordoned off pending a detailed assessment of the building’s structural and electrical integrity by relevant authorities.
“The situation is now fully under control. The fire has been extinguished and the immediate danger neutralised,” the agency said.
It added that normal operations at the hotel would only resume after clearance had been obtained from safety officials.
Oke-Osanyintolu commended the emergency responders for their speed, professionalism and coordination, saying the swift intervention helped prevent the incident from escalating and protected lives and property.
He urged hotel operators, facility managers and other business owners to prioritise regular electrical maintenance, install and properly service fire suppression equipment, and train staff on emergency evacuation procedures.
“Compliance with the Lagos State Safety Commission guidelines remains non-negotiable,” he said.
