The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist, author and Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oloye Lekan Alabi, describing his passing as a monumental loss to journalism, Ibadanland and Nigeria.
Alabi, a respected journalist, administrator and traditional chief, died on Saturday morning in Lagos at the age of 76, bringing to an end a distinguished career marked by excellence in journalism, public service and cultural advocacy.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan, the Chairman of the NUJ Oyo State Council, Akeem Abas, and the Secretary, Temidayo Adu, said the late Alabi’s contributions to the media profession and society would remain unforgettable.
The council described the deceased as an accomplished journalist whose influence extended far beyond news reporting, noting that his intellectual depth, courage and unwavering professionalism earned him admiration across the country.
According to the union, Alabi consistently used journalism as a tool for public enlightenment, responsible communication and national development throughout his illustrious career.
The NUJ also highlighted his service as Press Secretary to four successive former governors of Oyo State, describing his tenure as a reflection of his outstanding communication skills, administrative competence and ability to navigate the demands of public office with distinction.
Beyond journalism, the council said Alabi was widely regarded as an authority on the history, culture and traditions of Ibadanland, adding that his efforts in preserving and promoting the city’s rich heritage would continue to benefit future generations.
It noted that his death had created a significant vacuum in both the journalism profession and the traditional institution, saying it would be difficult to replace someone of his vast experience, wisdom and stature.
The union extended its condolences to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan-in-Council, members of the traditional institution, the Alabi family and the wider journalism community over what it described as a painful loss.
The council further acknowledged Alabi’s immense contributions to the development of journalism in Oyo State, stating that many journalists benefited from his mentorship, guidance and wealth of professional experience.
It urged media practitioners, particularly younger journalists, to uphold the values that defined the late elder statesman, including professionalism, discipline, courage, intellectual excellence and commitment to public service.
“Lekan Alabi was more than a journalist; he was an institution whose remarkable intellect, experience and commitment to journalism and public service enriched generations.
“His death represents an irreparable loss to the journalism profession, Oyo State and Ibadanland. His footprints are indelible, and his contributions will continue to resonate long after his passage,” the statement read.
The NUJ Oyo State Council prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive Alabi’s shortcomings, grant him eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus, and comfort his family, friends and associates during this difficult period.
