OpenAI has unveiled a major initiative to provide free access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models to scientists, mathematicians and engineers around the world, with the programme expected to reach 100,000 researchers by the end of 2027.
The initiative, according to a statement issued by the tech giant on Wednesday, will begin with 10,000 researchers before expanding over the next 18 months as part of the company’s broader commitment to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation through artificial intelligence.
OpenAI said the programme forms part of its pledge to invest more than US$250 million in scientific research through 2027, helping researchers tackle some of the world’s most pressing scientific and engineering challenges.
Successful applicants will receive one year of complimentary access to OpenAI’s frontier AI models, including its latest advanced reasoning systems.
The company said the tools are designed to assist researchers with complex scientific analysis, literature reviews, software development, debugging, large-scale data processing and the generation of new research ideas.
In addition, each selected researcher will be able to invite up to four collaborators from the same academic institution, allowing research teams to work together using the platform.
Announcing the programme, OpenAI said it aims to place cutting-edge AI capabilities directly in the hands of researchers rather than determining which scientific questions deserve priority.
“We’re giving scientists, mathematicians, and engineers free access to our frontier models—starting with 10,000 researchers and expanding to 100,000 through 2027,” the company said in the statement.
The initiative is expected to support research across a broad range of disciplines, including medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering and mathematics.
The new programme represents a significant expansion of OpenAI’s previous Researcher Access Programme, which largely focused on AI safety and societal impact research through limited API credits.
The latest initiative broadens support to researchers across virtually all scientific and engineering fields.
Opportunities for Nigerian Researchers
For Nigeria’s academic community, the announcement could provide valuable access to advanced computing tools that are often beyond the financial reach of many universities and research institutions.
Researchers could leverage the AI models to analyse large datasets, automate literature reviews, develop scientific software, improve engineering simulations and accelerate discoveries in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, environmental science and manufacturing.
The initiative could also strengthen collaboration between Nigerian institutions and international research partners by enabling shared access to sophisticated AI systems that would otherwise require substantial investment.
Although OpenAI has yet to announce detailed eligibility criteria or application dates, the company said the rollout will begin with an initial group of 10,000 researchers before expanding to 100,000 participants by 2027.
The announcement reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in advancing scientific research worldwide, with AI increasingly helping researchers speed up discoveries, improve productivity and solve computationally intensive problems.
If fully captured among the eligible beneficiaries, the programme could create new opportunities for Nigerian universities and research institutes to participate in globally competitive research projects.
