The Osun Development Association (ODA) has praised Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, for demonstrating what it described as political maturity and statesmanship during the funeral ceremonies of the late mother of APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru.
The association said the cordial interaction between the governor and the opposition candidate sends a positive message that political rivalry in Osun State can coexist with peace, mutual respect and shared commitment to the state’s development.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Chris Adetayo, ODA said the development reflects the spirit of the recently concluded Osun 2026 Democratic Governance, Peace and Electoral Integrity Summit, where political leaders and key stakeholders pledged to promote peaceful electioneering, issue-based campaigns and democratic participation free from violence.
Chairman of the association, Dr. Segun Aina, described the conduct of the political leaders as the type of example expected in a healthy democracy.
“This is exactly the kind of leadership our people expect to see. Political parties may differ in ideology and contest vigorously for votes, but they must never lose sight of our common humanity or the collective interest of Osun State. Respect across political divides is a hallmark of a mature democracy and an essential ingredient for peaceful elections,” Aina said.
He expressed optimism that the atmosphere of civility displayed at the funeral would become the defining character of political campaigns ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
Aina urged governorship candidates, party leaders and their supporters to conduct their activities with restraint, dignity and respect, warning against inflammatory statements, intimidation and actions capable of escalating political tension.
According to him, elections should be contests of ideas, competence and vision rather than hostility or violence.
“The images witnessed at the funeral are a reminder that, despite political differences, we remain one people with a shared responsibility to preserve the peace and stability of our dear state,” he added.
The ODA chairman reaffirmed the association’s commitment to working with political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders to sustain dialogue, strengthen civic responsibility and encourage peaceful participation throughout the electoral process.
He further stated that every effort promoting unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence would contribute to strengthening democracy in Osun State as preparations continue for the 2026 governorship poll.
Aina said the conduct displayed by Governor Adeleke and Oyebamiji deserves commendation and should serve as a model for other political actors, stressing that ODA would continue to champion initiatives that encourage dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful democratic engagement.
The association also reminded residents that safeguarding the peace, stability and development of Osun State remains a collective responsibility, urging citizens to support initiatives that promote harmony before, during and after the governorship election.
