A fatal road traffic crash along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway at Leme in Ogun State has claimed two lives.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash, which occurred at about 5:45 p.m. and involved a black Lexus car bearing registration number KJA 398 JR and a black TVS motorcycle with registration number AYT 837 QU, was due to excessive speeding
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Odunsin, said FRSC rescue personnel responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 5:50 p.m., arriving at the accident scene within five minutes.
Odunsin said six adult males were involved in the crash.
While two of the victims died, the remaining four escaped without injuries.
He explained that FRSC rescue operatives evacuated the victims and deposited the bodies of the deceased at the State Hospital, Ijaye Mortuary, Abeokuta.
The rescue team also recovered personal belongings of the victims, including an identity card and a mobile phone, before clearing the accident scene to restore the free flow of traffic on the busy highway.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
He specifically advised drivers and motorcyclists to avoid speeding and other dangerous driving habits, stressing that excessive speed significantly reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the severity of road crashes.
The sector commander reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to improving road safety through sustained enforcement of traffic laws, public enlightenment campaigns, and prompt emergency response services.
He also appealed to members of the public to report road crashes and other emergencies promptly through the FRSC National Emergency Toll-Free Number 122 or the nearest FRSC patrol team.
The latest accident adds to growing concerns over frequent speed-related crashes on major highways across the country, despite repeated safety campaigns by the FRSC.
