The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a ban on the use of commercial motorcycles and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as part of measures to safeguard the newly completed road infrastructure.

The restriction, which takes effect this week, was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare.

According to Dare, the decision is aimed at protecting the multi-billion-naira superhighway from misuse, premature deterioration, and activities capable of undermining its long-term durability.

He described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure that requires proper management and maintenance to ensure it continues to serve Nigerians effectively for many years.

“The measures are necessary to preserve the road and ensure its long-term sustainability,” the Federal Controller stated.

Beyond the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okadas, and tricycles, the ministry also announced fresh restrictions on the indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles along the highway.

Dare said the directive extends beyond the coastal highway to cover all bridges across Lagos State, warning that unauthorised parking would no longer be tolerated.

The ministry also prohibited the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as unacceptable and harmful to public infrastructure and the environment.

To ensure strict compliance, the Federal Controller revealed that road signs indicating the new restrictions have already been installed at various points along the highway.

He added that enforcement task force officials would be stationed at strategic locations to monitor compliance and prevent violations.

Dare warned that anyone found flouting the directives would face strict enforcement measures as the government intensifies efforts to maintain order and protect critical infrastructure.

He urged motorists and other road users to obey the new regulations, stressing that preserving the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would enhance its lifespan, improve safety, and protect the significant public investment committed to the project.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the federal government’s flagship road infrastructure projects designed to improve connectivity, boost economic activities, and enhance transportation along Nigeria’s coastal corridor.
