The deputy governorship candidate of the Accord party in the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election, Bayo Omoyeni, has withdrawn from the race and defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Omoyeni announced his decision during a political gathering held on Saturday in Ikere Ekiti, where he formally declared support for the PDP governorship candidate, Wole Oluyede, ahead of the June 20, 2026 election.
Explaining his decision, Omoyeni said he chose to back a candidate he believed possessed the leadership qualities needed to move Ekiti State forward and protect the interests of the people.
He described Oluyede as a long-time political associate and elder brother whose governorship ambition deserved collective support from residents of the state.
“You are my big brother. This is an Ikere agenda. I am not only withdrawing from the race, but I am also joining you in the PDP to ensure victory in the election,” Omoyeni stated.
The former Accord Party running mate also promised to mobilise his political structure and supporters for the PDP campaign, disclosing that about 2,000 members of the Accord Party were ready to defect alongside him.
“My people are ready to join you in this party. I promise you they will not be less than 2,000 members. I congratulate you in advance, sir,” he added.
Reacting to the development, the PDP governorship candidate, Oluyede, welcomed Omoyeni and his supporters into the party, describing the defection as a major boost to the PDP’s campaign efforts.
Oluyede said the move reflected growing confidence in the PDP’s vision for Ekiti State and assured the new members of equal opportunities within the party structure.
“PDP is a great party where everyone has the opportunity to realise his political aspirations. I want to assure you and your supporters that we will not disappoint you,” Oluyede said.
“As from today, your interest is my interest. You are now members of our campaign team, and together we will work for the success of our party in the forthcoming election,” he added.
The defection comes as political parties intensify campaigns and strategic alignments ahead of the June 20 governorship poll in Ekiti State.
