World record holder Tobi Amusan has secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 CAA African Senior Athletics Championship after winning the women’s 100 metres hurdles final on Wednesday in Ghana.

The 29-year-old sprint hurdler defeated Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller to claim the title, while fellow Nigerian hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo finished third to earn bronze for Team Nigeria.

The victory marked Amusan’s third African Championship gold medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles event, further strengthening her dominance on the continent.

For Tabugbo, the bronze medal represented her first podium finish for Nigeria at the championship.

Nigeria also recorded success in the men’s 100 metres final as Chidera Ezeakor claimed bronze after clocking 10.31 seconds.

South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana finished second with the same time, while Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme won the gold medal after crossing the line in 10.25 seconds.

In the women’s 100 metres final, Rosemary Chukwuma delivered another medal for Nigeria by finishing second in a dramatic photo-finish race.

Chukwuma clocked 11.48 seconds and initially celebrated what appeared to be a victory before officials eventually awarded gold to Cameroon’s Herverge Kole Etame, who was credited with the identical time.

Liberia’s Thelma Davies finished third with a time of 11.50 seconds.

Following the controversial outcome, athletics-focused newspaper Making of Champions reported that Nigeria had filed an official protest challenging the decision that placed Chukwuma second.

Nigeria’s medal haul continued in the women’s hammer throw event, where Sade Olatoye secured silver with a best throw of 69.60 metres.

The country had opened its medal account on Tuesday through Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Pamela Amaechi in the women’s discus throw.

Oladipo won silver with a throw of 55.37 metres, while Amaechi claimed bronze after recording 53.23 metres.

The championship also marked Oladipo’s first major appearance for Nigeria since switching her sporting allegiance from England to Nigeria.
